Millennials, it’s time to address “the elephant” in the room

Conversations that did not happen, and the problems they ignore to address, it is time for this generation to rise to the occasion. NOW.

An “elephant in the room” situation could be defined as, “A major problem or controversial issue that is present but avoided as a subject for discussion because it is more comfortable to do so.”

So why do conversations about the “elephant” are less likely to happen?
First, there is fear, fear of losing your job, fear of losing money or position are some examples.

Second, there is comfort. It is easier not to directly address the problem and disturb the steady water. That is why you find yourself managing to work your way around the problem instead.

Third, Underestimation; which takes place when people underestimate the consequences of certain situations that they ignore to address.

Fourth, the “It’s not my problem” situation; when people simply do not care enough to take action, convincing themselves that others will eventually address the problem.

For so long, the elephant was ignored, and toxic behaviors were normalized. I am sorry to deliver such bad news, but many of the world’s population are living under horrible circumstances.

As a generation it is time to act and get involved in final solutions for the following issues:

Climate change — is not an issue of debate anymore, it is the future of our planet, which means our whole existence is being threatened. In 2019, millennials started their fight, directly addressing the elephant, and the pandemic should not stop this fight.

Social justice — this generation should not tolerate hate anymore. Discrimination based on color, sex, religion, or any other factor is simply unacceptable. We all must realize this instance, that we are all in this life together on earth, we are all here for a reason, no one’s existence is less important than the other. So why not help each other grow as individuals and indulge in a collective experience instead, one where you and I have a space to live life to the fullest. It is enough of the talks, the political propaganda, and the empty promises of a better world where people are more equal. All people should be equal at this particular moment, through you and me, yes we have that power, just you and me, I can tell you that.

All sorts of violence against women — it is not just the women`s fight for a safer environment for them to live, it all of humanity`s fight. Women represent our whole existence. Think about it. Who would be here, reading these words, breathing, eating, and simply existing without a woman? So why do we tolerate sexual harassment, physical or emotional harm practiced daily against them?

It is not a male`s, white`s, or the elite`s society. It is a global society that includes all people. Women and men, Africans and Asians, Americans, Europeans, and Australians are all human beings.

Of course, other issues require our full attention. We must be fully aware of these problems, be open to one another, directly engage with the community, and try to create a difference.

It is a wake-up call for this generation. Let’s step up, claim instant changes, and give ourselves the chance to live in this better world we are being promised. Because we are the leaders, we are responsible not only for ourselves but for our younger brothers and sisters too. The conversation starts now.

If we ignored the elephant and refused to address this tough situation, fear culture will continue to grow, people and toxic behaviors will gain undue and unchecked power and influence. We will have a society with no real moral values.

“When there’s an elephant in the room, you can’t pretend it isn’t there and just discuss the ants.”
